africandancers.jpg

Belief in the supernatural plays a pivotal role in all African societies. Magic and animism (belief in spirits) is central to African religion in general. Rituals are believed to exert an influence over negative forces and masks, statues, and headdresses form an intrinsic part of religious ritual. Masks are believed to be imbued with magical powers which transfer to the wearer on special occasions. Rituals are used to gain the favor of the ancestors, the gods, and the forces of nature. Women are not allowed to look at the dancers who escort a deceased person into the spirit world for fear of harm to unborn children, and because their life-giving power may impede the progress of the departed person. Art objects, usually wooden or clay figures, are often used to make contact with departed spirits and guide their powers.

HAND CARVED MASKS

A bicycle; Actual size=240 pixels wide

Symbol of Africa, the abstact grimmace of the Wood Carved Masks is synonymous with the African Continetent.
Often first charred over an open fire, then carved to reveal the white wood below, designs are always intricate.
In some natural dyes are used to introduce fascinating colors, and the mask is finally oiled to prevent cracking. In others the wood is darkened in natural colors.
Size varies from about 8 inches high to some 24 inches high.
Backlight these masks to create very interesting and different wall lamps.
The illustration (left) shows some colored masks chosen at random from many available at any time. Please note that individual design will vary from artist to artist, but a common theme is to be found throughout. These are not standard 'factory' items
All dimensions approximate for hand made items.

Individually crafted, no two are ever identical.
Very attractive, individually or in groups.

ZULU SHIELDS

A water bottle; Actual size=180 pixels wide

Used defensively in the past, these are now largely ceremonial.
A lattice frame is covered in animal hide, commonly black and white, but many include colored patterns, originally as regimental identification.
Smaller ones are used for dancing and for ceremonial purposes, but larger sizes are still made.
Made in sets of shield, spear and knobkerrie, and in differing hide coloring. These sets make super wall hangings.
Again, no two will ever be identical, although each artist has his own unique a central theme.

Prices:

DANCING 100mm(4inch) $30.00
CEREMONIAL 250MM(10 INCH) $40.00
BATTLE 500MM(20 INCH) $50.00
